‘Constantine’: New Details About J.J. Abrams’ Cancelled Max Series

Hellblazer is doomed!

Bad luck has once more struck the Hellblazer. J.J. Abrams’ John Constantine series has been officially cancelled by Max, squashing any dreams of his Justice League Dark slate seeing the light of day.

In 2020 it was announced that J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot, would be working to create a brand new slate of series for DC’s supernatural heroes, starting with a John Constantine show and ending with a Justice League Dark crossover. It seems after a production fraught with troubles, the Hellblazer Max series has been officially cancelled:

“The new show had been far enough into development that a lead actor was already in talks to take on the lead role, but sources confirmed to Variety that the Max project was dead,” Variety wrote. “Four scripts were written for the series, which was set in contemporary London.”

While J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot have had far from a spotless record, it certainly would’ve been interesting to see his take on John Constantine and the Justice League Dark cast. Especially given the success DC has had both on Max with Peacemaker and with its more mystical elements, it seemed as though the only thing dooming this project to failure was Hellblazer himself.

What can fans expect from the next John Constantine movie?

Keanu Reeves is attached to reprise his role as John Constantine for the first time since 2005, with Francis Lawrence returning to the director’s chair. The first Constantine movie earned $230.9 million at the worldwide box office.

The Constantine announcement has sparked a lot of excitement among fans, who are eager to see what Keanu Reeves will bring to the role in the sequel. The 58-year-old actor is known for his ability to bring depth and nuance to characters like the fan-favorite assassin John Wick, and fans are confident that he will bring the same level of dedication and attention to detail to the role of Constantine.

The plot of the Constantine sequel is being kept under wraps. Fans can expect to see Keanu Reeves navigating the dangerous and supernatural world that the character inhabits, as he continues to fight against the forces of evil and to protect humanity from the threats posed by demons and other supernatural creatures.

The Constantine sequel is expected to be an Elseworlds-type movie set outside the DC Universe. James Gunn and Peter Safran are working on creating an interconnected DCU consisting of film, television, animation and video game projects.
