Season 2 of Creature Commandos may be coming sooner than fans think! DC Studios is putting the pedal to the metal when developing the next season of their flagship animated series.

Creature Commandos was a surprise hit. While James Gunn has a reputation for making hits with misfits, many saw the animated series as a fun little detour before DC Studios got to the real meat of their slate with Superman and Peacemaker. However, the project was a smash hit with audiences and critics alike, with the project getting a greenlight for season 2 before fans could even edit their G.I. Robot fancams.

Though given how long any series takes to release these days, and how busy James Gunn is in running DC Studios, fans were content to kick their legs back and wait years for Creature Commandos to return to their television screens. However, they may not need to wait as long as they think. In a recent interview, showrunner Dean Lorey revealed that season 2 of the animated series is being ‘fast-tracked’ by DC Studios, with plots for the next batch of episodes already being broken out.

“I mean, it’s still early days, but we are actively working on breaking the season and starting to figure that out,” Lorey told The Direct. “So it’s definitely moving forward. I mean, it’s like, they put it on a fast track, and they seem to mean it. So, yeah, we’re in it.”

When Will Creature Commandos Season 2 Release?

Of course, any animated show is going to take time to get off the ground. Even the most generous estimates suggest that Creature Commandos likely won’t return for season 2 until 2026 at the earliest, potentially stretching into early 2027. However, given James Gunn’s either series Peacemaker had a three year gap between seasons, the show is coming in under the curve for DC Studios. Though luckily, Dean Lorey was able to share some more details about the upcoming season to tide fans over until its released.

“I think it’ll be at least somewhat accurate,” Lorey explained when asked if the new members of the Creature Commandos team introduced in the finale would play a large role in season 2. “I mean, it’s like those are all characters that we think would be really fun in the season,” he said. “And James [Gunn] wrote, you know, all the episodes last season. So those were his instincts, which are pretty good. So yeah, I would say there’s that and, I mean, there’s no world where I would want to do a season without a beefed-up GI Robot.”

Three new members are joining the Creature Commandos leading into season 2. These include Nosferata and Khalis, two monstrous villains making their DC Studios debut in the animated series, and King Shark, who returns from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad played by Diedrich Bader. The Bride, Weasel, Doctor Phosphorous, and G.I. Robot are all also expected to make a return to the team in the upcoming season.
