The Creature Commandos may return sooner than fans think! James Gunn provides an interesting update on the DC Universe’s flagship animated series.
With all the excitement in the DC Universe fandom over the past year, it’s easy to forget that James Gunn actually kicked off the new era of the franchise with an animated series based on the Creature Commandos. And, unlike most shows in the realm of prestige franchises, the series was actually renewed for a season 2 shortly after its first season wrapped.
Yet now a year from the finale of the first season, fans have been itching for any update on season 2. Luckily, it seems as though James Gunn hasn’t been silent due to a lack of motion. The writer revealed that Creature Commandos is already in production, suggesting that animation and voice work for the DC Universe project is underway.
“[The Creature Commandos will return] when we’re done animating the new season,” James Gunn wrote on Threads. “Which is in production now.”
Creature Commandos’ Place In The DC Universe
Of course, one of the big questions on everyone’s mind heading into season 2 is when exactly in the DC Universe will Creature Commandos take place. The franchise recently introduced Salvation, a secret prison for Metahumans that could be integral to the next season’s story. While James Gunn didn’t say much, he did confirm that the series’ next entry takes place “After” Peacemaker season 2.
Given James Gunn likely has more control over Creature Commandos than most other DC Universe projects, it’s likely that season 2 at least touched on the Salvation storyline started in Peacemaker. Though with Dean Lorey taking over the role as showrunner, it’s possible that the show diverges a tiny bit from Gunn’s original plans.
