‘Creed II’: Dolph Lundgren Explains How Ivan Drago’s Life Turned Out

Creed II Ivan Drago Dolph LundgrenDolph Lundgren will be reprising his role as Ivan Drago in the highly-anticipated sequel, Creed II. Lundgren first portrayed this character in Rocky IV, the film where Ivan Drago famously kills Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in the ring. After Apollo’s death, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) fights Ivan Drago in Russia and emerges victorious as he avenges his friend’s death.

Creed II finds Ivan Drago decades later, now with his son Viktor carrying the legacy of his name into the ring as he prepares to fight against Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan). According to Lundgren, Ivan has seen better days:

“He’s been having a pretty rough time. When the Soviet Union fell, he was thrown out of Russia, lost everything and ended up in the Ukraine, where he lives with his son, Viktor. His wife divorced him — for a richer man, probably.”

Lundgren explains that Ivan sees Viktor as a means of redemption for him:

“So, Ivan is in very bad shape, angry and hateful. He wants redemption, and he’s going to use his son to get what’s his, what had been taken away from him 35 years ago by the Soviet Union and Rocky Balboa.”

Well, after you lose to Rocky Balboa in such historic fashion, it isn’t a surprise that your country will turn their backs on you. It’ll be interesting to see how the film explores the dynamics of both camps: Ivan Drago & Viktor Drago and of course, Rocky Balboa & Adonis Creed. This match will certainly be one for the ages.

Here is the synopsis for Creed II:

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

Directed by Steven Caple Jr. from a script written by Cheo Hodari Coker and Sylvester Stallone, Creed II stars Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Dolph Lundgren, Wood Harris, Andre Ward, Florian Munteanu and Buddy Marcelle.

Creed II will be released in theaters on November 21, 2018.
