During an interview with USA Today, Creed II director Steven Caple Jr. discussed the reunion between Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago.

Creed II will follow Adonis Creed as trains for a fight against the son of Ivan Drago, the man who killed his father Apollo Creed in the ring over 30 years ago. While Adonis will once again train under the guidance of Rocky Balboa, who was also Apollo’s trainer for the fatal match, Steven Caple Jr. explained why the stakes will be higher against the heavyweight brawler named Viktor Drago:

“The stakes are much higher within the fight and even outside of the ring. Creed is all about technique and speed, everything that Rocky taught him.”

Caple Jr. also explained why Rocky will have concerns upon reuniting with Ivan Drago:

“It’s kind of like, ‘I don’t want this to happen. I don’t want to see a flashback of ’86.’ He has his doubts about this fight, for sure.”

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

Directed by Steven Caple Jr. from a script written by Cheo Hodari Coker and Sylvester Stallone, Creed II stars Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Dolph Lundgren, Wood Harris, Andre Ward, and Buddy Marcelle.

Creed II will be released in theaters on November 21, 2018.
