Dakota Johnson has discussed the shock and frustration she felt at being dragged into the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

Johnny Depp was suing his ex-wife Amber Heard for defamation over comments made in an op-ed about domestic abuse, which Heard wrote for the Washington Post. Heard was countersuing Depp over comments made by his former lawyer. The jury ultimately found in Depp’s favor after a lengthy case in which both actors’ careers came under scrutiny and several prolific stars were brought into proceedings. A clip involving Depp and Dakota Johnson went viral on social media during the proceedings.

Dakota Johnson’s name started trending on social media during the televised trial thanks to a clip in which the actress noticed Johnny Depp’s finger injury at a press conference. During the trial, Depp had testified that Amber Heard had severed the tip of his finger with a vodka bottle during an argument in 2015.

The clip in question came from a press conference for Black Mass, a film in which Johnny Depp appeared alongside Dakota Johnson. It shows Johnson apparently noticing Depp’s bandaged finger and laughing after he seemingly explains it away. All of this happens as the film’s director, Scott Cooper, is speaking and so none of what is said between Depp and Johnson is picked up and the exact nature of their interaction is unclear.

Speaking about the internet’s fixation on the clip during the trial, Dakota Johnson expressed her surprise and frustration at becoming a focal point for people watching the trial. She also shared her shock at the trivial way in which people were engaging with the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial. Talking to Vanity Fair, Johnson said:

“I was like, ‘For the love of God, why? Why am I involved in this?’. I don’t remember that at all, but please, take me out of this. Don’t let this go further. Can you imagine, oh, my God, if I was called to the witness stand? I can’t believe that people are watching [the trial] like it’s a show. It’s like it’s a courtroom drama and my heart breaks. It’s so, so, so crazy. Humans are so f***ing weird. The internet is a wild, wild place.”

The trial has now concluded, with Johnny Depp awarded over $10 million in damages. Amber Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages. Heard is understood to be considering appealing the ruling.
