Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe had an eloquent response to the transphobic tweets recently posted by author JK Rowling.

After JK Rowling recently caused controversy on Twitter for her transphobic tweets, Harry Potter star  Daniel Radcliffe addressed the issue in a heartfelt essay published on The Trevor Project’s blog. The series lead isn’t the first from the cast to address the issue after Cho Chang actress, Katie Leung, responded to Rowling’s comments by tweeting a thread of fundraisers and sites that support black trans women and the black trans community.

The author previously caused outrage for her stance on the issue back in December, but her most recent outburst compelled Radcliffe to pen a letter to fans who felt hurt by JK Rowling’s comments. He explained that firmly supports the transgender community, suggesting that society needs to do more to support them and “not invalidate their identities.” The Harry Potter star also went on to apologize to fans who found solace in the books and the films, and hopes that Rowling’s opinions haven’t ruined the Wizarding World.

“Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.”
