Did the reboot save Daredevil: Born Again? Stars Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox reveal the series originally had no connection to the Netflix show.
When Daredevil: Born Again was announced, many fans saw it as the revival of one of the best shows to come out of Marvel’s collaboration with Netflix. However, it seems the project was seen internally as more of a reboot. When asked about connections to the previous incarnation of the series, Vincent D’Onofrio revealed to TVInsider “It originally wasn’t going to be at all, but now it’s a lot.”
This disconnect between Daredevil: Born Again and the Netflix series was clear to anyone keeping an eye on the project. Marvel had kicked some of the most iconic characters from the franchise, like Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, to the curb to avoid any connections. Luckily, it seems the studio learned its lesson with the show’s creative reboot.
Charlie Cox Breaks Down Daredevil’s Continuity Change
While it’s a relief Daredevil: Born Again will be connected to the Netflix series, it doesn’t answer the question of why Marvel would go back on its original plans. When asked about the decision to change course during the project’s creative overhaul, Charlie Cox admits it likely came down to multiple factors.
“I think [it’s] the fans. I think [it’s] the studio as well,” Cox explained. “That’s a really fine balance to strike If you’re going to remake a show and call it Season 1 and it was a successful show and it was kind of beloved, then you’ve got to do what people liked. But also you’ve got to have a reason for remaking it. So you have to change it up a bit. And that’s just a really fine balance to find.”
The choice of whether or not to connect Daredevil: Born Again to the Netflix series was certainly a tricky one. However, given the success of recent legacy continuations like X-Men ’97, it’s clear that a complete reboot was the one way to go. Now, Daredevil fans just need to hope Marvel brings back the rest of the Defenders in the same way!
