Daredevil: Born Again was almost never made! Producer Brad Winderbaum reveals the real reason Marvel Studios greenlit the beloved series.
Even though season 1 had its issues, Daredevil: Born Again quickly became one of the most beloved shows that Marvel Studios has ever put out. And with season 2 due out soon and season 3 currently in production, it almost seems like a no-brainer that Daredevil was always planned to make his return to the small screen.
But it seems as though that wasn’t always a part of the plan. Brad Winderbaum, who serves as the Head of Marvel Television and producer on all of their projects, revealed that a new series focused on Charlie Cox’s Daredevil wasn’t always in the cards. Rather, it was his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home that convinced him to greenlight Daredevil: Born Again.
“The second I heard that Charlie was going to be in Spider-Man, I was like, we’ve got to make the show,” Winderbaum explained on the Daredevil: Born Again lookback podcast. “It opened the door. Once the door was ajar, I, like, got a crowbar in there and started to kind of inch it open.”
Daredevil’s Original Place In The MCU
Based on Brad Winderbaum’s comments, it seems as though the general consensus at that time was that the Netflix characters like Daredevil and The Punisher were essentially off limits – at least for quite some time. However, with the films deciding to treat those versions of the characters as canon, the producer was assured that a project like Daredevil: Born Again wouldn’t be rejected.
Of course, following the success of Daredevil: Born Again, it’s likely that the door Brad Winderbaum was talking about is only going to get wider. Krysten Ritter is set to return as Jessica Jones in season 2, and it’s almost certain that Mike Colter and Finn Jones will reprise their roles as Luke Cage and Iron Fist, respectively.
