Was Daredevil: Born Again going the completely wrong direction? Showrunner Dario Scardapane talks being brought on by Marvel to reboot the project.

If you ask any Marvel fan on the street, they’d tell you that they’re exciting to see Charlie Cox back in Daredevil: Born Again. However, that wasn’t always the case. When the series was first announced for Disney Plus, it was angled as a “full reboot” of the character, throwing out the Netflix series entirely for a fresh take original to the MCU. This reportedly included less time focused on Matt Murdock’s life as a vigilante, putting him squarely in the court room.

However, partway through production of the series’ first season, Marvel decided that the direction they were taking Daredevil: Born Again just wasn’t working. The studio fired showrunners Matt Corman and Chris Ord, replacing them with Dario Scardapane, who had previously worked for their Netflix universe on The Punisher. It’s this version of the show that is set to debut this March on Disney Plus as the return of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, keeping his history as the Man Without Fear on the rival streaming service.

Why Marvel Rebooted Daredevil: Born Again

Marvel has been silent on the creative overhaul undertaken by Daredevil: Born Again, preferring to lean fully into this new vision of bringing Charlie Cox into the MCU as fans knew him. Yet with its Disney Plus premiere right around the corner, Dario Scardapane finally spoke on the reasoning behind the new direction for the series. Namely, that the original pilot just didn’t fee like Daredevil.

“[The footage] had some really strong points, but it wasn’t feeling in line with what Daredevil had been established to be,” Scardapane told SFX Magazine. “At the very end of the Netflix show, Foggy, Karen and Matt had a dream written out on the back of a napkin. We start with that dream. It’s not a dream that needs too much explanation; three good friends go into business together.”

Given how seamlessly the ending of Daredevil set up for a new era for the series, it makes sense for Daredevil: Born Again to run with it. The MCU also has a reputation of being rather sanitized, so ensuring that the original spirit of the show isn’t lost in the transition to Disney Plus is paramount in ensuring a long future for Charlie Cox’s hero.
