X-Men Rights Issue Caused ‘Daredevil’ Season 3 To Change Bullseye’s Story

X-Men Daredevil Season 3 Marvel Netflix Bullseye

The new season of Daredevil had to feature an altered backstory for one iconic Marvel character due to an X-Men rights issue with 20th Century Fox.

Daredevil season 3 has finally hit Netflix and the show follows the same pattern as the past two seasons by introducing a very iconic character. Actor Wilson Bethel appears in the new season as Benjamin Poindexter, aka Bullseye. The villain last appeared in live-action form in the infamous 2003 film Daredevil, played by Colin Farrell. The character has returned to fight Daredevil for the new season of the Netflix series but one aspect of his backstory that is tied in with the X-Men franchise had to be omitted.

In the comics, Bullseye’s bones are merged with adamantium, the metal used to coat X-Men icon Wolverine’s bones and claws. With the Fox/Disney deal still not officially done, this of course caused a bit of an issue when the team behind Daredevil were trying to bring the character to life on the show. Showrunner Erik Oleson recently spoke with ComicBook.com about why the changes had to be made.

“Well, you’ve seen the season now, and he is not yet fully Bullseye. Like he doesn’t have his- I’m not even allowed to use the word ‘adamantium’ because Marvel and Fox and Disney haven’t merged yet.”

Oleson went on to reveal why he feels that the omission of adamantium was ultimately a benefit to the tone of the series.

“But in the comics, obviously, Bullseye, he’s got abilities that are heightened, and I was more interested in telling the grounded psychological story of how a real person becomes Bullseye, because that fit in with not just the tone and style that I wanted to use for Season 3, which was somewhere between Season 1 and The Sopranos, but it allows me to just keep the show grounded.”
