With the pending merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox on the horizon, films that are on the current slate of 20th Century Fox have been undergoing some sort of shuffle in their release dates – likely due to the Disney deal. Because of this, Dark Phoenix had its release date pushed once again from February 2019 to June 2019.
But given Fox’s slate of upcoming films following the aftermath of the pending Disney merger, it is possible that Dark Phoenix could become the first X-Men film to be released under the Disney banner because the film’s release date doesn’t have any conflict with upcoming Disney releases. This is according to a new report by THR that explores the near future of Fox’s upcoming releases.
To those wondering if this possibility entails for the current incarnation of the X-Men franchise to be absorbed into the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that is unlikely. Dark Phoenix star Sophie Turner was recently asked about potentially linking up with the Avengers in the future:
I don’t know. I feel the complexities of the X-Men being shunned by society and segregated is not something that happens in the Avengers universe. Of course, I want to see them crossover but I don’t think the themes through X-Men will collaborate well with the Avengers. It’ll be very different. If they do it, I’d love to see how it turns out.
What do you think? Will Dark Phoenix be the first X-Men film released under Disney as a result of the upcoming merger? Sound off in the comments below, and be sure to continue following Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news involving this upcoming merger.
Dark Phoenix is directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
“In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”
Dark Phoenix opens in theaters on June 7, 2019.
