Here’s Where ‘Dark Phoenix’ Takes Place In The X-Men Timeline

Dark Phoenix was revealed to be taking place in the ’90s quite a while ago but writer/director Simon Kinberg recently  specified which year the latest X-Men adventure will take place in.

The latest series of X-Men films, from 2011’s First Class to 2016’s Apocalypse, has caught quite a bit of flack for doing so much time-jumping. The decade-hopping that happens from film to film whilst each character seemingly remains the same age has become one of the most common marks against the franchise as of late and now Simon Kinberg is doubling down on that by having the latest X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, take place in the ’90s.

Kinberg has worked as a writer on films such as X-Men: The Last Stand, Days of Future Past, 2015’s Fantastic Four, Apocalypse, and now he’ll be making his directorial debut with the next addition to the franchise, Dark Phoenix. As made apparent by the reference to Return of the Jedi in X-Men: Apocalypse, the film took place in 1983. In a recent interview with Empire, Kinberg revealed that Dark Phoenix will take place nine years after Apocalypse.

“It’s 1992, nine years after Apocalypse. The X-Men have become the X-Men that many of us know from the comics – they are heroes. They’re still viewed as different by society, but they’ve been more embraced than ever before. And when the movie starts in 1992, they are a known superhero team.”

If you have major ’90s nostalgia, then the first few months of 2019 are going to be a treat for you. Dark Phoenix hits theaters on Valentine’s Day and less than a month later, the ’90s-set Marvel origin film Captain Marvel hits theaters. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Dark Phoenix as more information becomes available. What are your thoughts on the decade-hopping nature of the latest X-Men films? X-Men: Dark Phoenix is directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.

“In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”

The film is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2019.
