Simon Kinberg Describes ‘Gambit’ Movie As A Romantic Comedy

Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg has offered an update on the Gambit film with Channing Tatum set to play the card-wielding mutant.

Twentieth Century Fox has been developing a solo Gambit film since 2014 with Tatum attached to star. In that time, directors Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski have signed on and left the project with the film currently looking for a new director. Kinberg, who is on the project as a producer, spoke with IGN and says the film will adopt a romantic comedy tone due to his character:

“When you look at Gambit. he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”

Kinberg later cites Deadpool, Logan, and The New Mutants as X-Men films that explored different genres:

“Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film.”

The producer goes on to say that the Gambit spin-off will still be a superhero movie with villains and heroes:

“You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”

As the Disney-Fox deal looms, Kinberg provided an update on the status of Gambit, Multiple Man with James Franco set to star, and Drew Goddard’s X-Force:

“Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year. Multiple Man, that script’s being worked on right now. We’re just waiting for Drew Goddard to be done with releasing his film that comes out in a few weeks, and then he’ll get started on that [X-Force] script to direct.”

Kinberg, Tatum, and Reid Carolin are still onboard to be producers.

Gambit is a character within Marvel that is often associated with the X-Men. Gambit’s mutant powers range from the ability to control and manipulate kinetic energy to being very skilled at throwing cards. Audiences were able to see Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Taylor Kitsch brought was in the starring role but the audience and critical reception for this film were extremely low.
