David Ayer Says Geoff Johns Broke His ‘Suicide Squad’ Timeline

Suicide Squad director David Ayer says Geoff Johns broke his timeline for the film with one simple Harley Quinn addition.

It’s well known by now that Suicide Squad underwent several last-minute changes. According to David Ayer himself, this was due in no small part to the success of Deadpool and the reviews for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Since it was announced that Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League would be released on HBO Max, the Suicide Squad director has been answering more questions regarding what was originally intended for the film. One such answer revealed the story behind an interesting timeline error between the film and how David Ayer described it.

While it didn’t pop up in the film itself, David Ayer explained the look behind Jared Leto’s Joker. According to the director, Batman smashed Joker’s teeth after the Clown Prince of Crime murdered Robin. He was then sent to Arkham Asylum where he meets Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and later has the “Damaged” tattoo put on his head. However, the title card that describes Harley Quinn has her as an accomplice to the murder of Robin, which contradicts the timeline that David Ayer had planned.

When asked about this timeline error, the Suicide Squad director stated that it was Geoff Johns who added this bit in, thus disrupting the continuity David Ayer had planned for the film and possibly a larger plan for Ben Affleck’s Batman, Jaret Leto’s Joker and the DCEU:

What do you all make of this error? Should Geoff Johns have better communicated with David Ayer before adding this title card to Suicide Squad? What did you think of the film? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Here is the synopsis for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad:

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Written and directed by David Ayer, the film stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, and Scott Eastwood.

Suicide Squad is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Stay tuned for all the latest news surround David Ayer and the film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more great video content!
