David Ayer's a big fan!

David Ayer, director of Suicide Squad praised the new Peacemaker series from James Gunn

When it comes to Suicide Squad, director David Ayer is certainly unhappy with the finished result. Last year, he opened up about his disappointing experience with the film’s post-production in particular, and openly disowned the 2016 theatrical cut, claiming that his unreleased Director’s Cut was the superior version of his film.

The property got a standalone sequel/soft reboot with James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad, which received critical acclaim. With Peacemaker, we get some sort of a sequel to the film, this time following the further adventures of one Christopher Smith (John Cena). The series has been receiving praise from critics and fans alike, and now you can add David Ayer to that list of fans.

On Twitter, David Ayer shared James Gunn’s tweet in response to the latter director liking a tweet that referred to the original Suicide Squad as a “piece of s–t.” James Gunn confirmed that he only liked the tweet in defense of actor Pete Davidson rather than the context of the tweet criticizing David Ayer’s original film. Thankfully, he unliked it and clarified his continuing respect for his fellow filmmaker. Here is the following tweet:

Although a subset of toxic fans have tried to build some sort of drama between David Ayer and James Gunn, it’s safe to say that the directors of both Suicide Squad movies have nothing but respect for one another. It’s also nice to see that David Ayer remains a fan, and that he is enjoying Peacemaker as well.

Here is the synopsis for James Gunn’s Peacemaker:

PEACEMAKER explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it!

Peacemaker was created by James Gunn, who wrote all the episodes and directed five of them. The first season of the HBO Max series will consist of eight episodes, with Brad Anderson, Jody Hill, and Rosemary Rodriguez also directing episodes. Clint Mansell and Kevin Kiner will compose the score.

Peacemaker is now streaming on HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the James Gunn DC series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
