Following Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC’s upcoming film ‘Suicide Squad’ is likely to be one of their most anticipated films to date. Many believe that this film will be DC’s redemption after the mixed reception of Batman V Superman, but following the idea of a film focusing completely on the bad guys of the DC Universe, its hard to think that the film wont be anything but unique. Following a recent set visit from Yahoo, Director David Ayer sat down and discussed many aspects behind the film, one of which seems to be the highly anticipated film debut of Harley Quinn.
Following his discussion about The Joker, the director was asked about Harley’s new look, specifically her tattoo’s:
“She did these herself in prison. They’re stick and poke tattoos, prison-style tattoos, that you do when you don’t have a tattoo gun. She did them herself out of boredom and desperation… There’s I Heart Puddin’, a Joker face, a love heart… that’s obviously reflective of her time in prison.”
When asked about working with Margot Robbie, the director seemed quite “smitten” with the actress.
“I don’t know what to say other than a star is born. She’s riveting, magnetic, she is the character. I don’t recognize her out of make-up, we spend so much time together on set, I’m uncomfortable around her if she’s not in make-up.”
Continuing on the topic of the actress, the director revealed that Harley Quinn was a key reason he took the job in the first place.
“Harley’s one of my favorite characters, she’s one of the reasons I wanted to do this project. She’s so complex, she’s all about dichotomies, so many opposing qualities in the same person, just like all of us. It’s nice to explore those things. It’s rare to have such a strong female character who’s so active in the story, so driven and so powerful – yet has these weaknesses and achilles heels, just like anybody.”
While many would argue that although her look is fairly different than her initial inception, the overall consensus for the deception has been positive. It wont be long now before fans will see Robbie in the role, and hopefully the film lives up to the hype.
Suicide Squad his theaters August 5th, 2016.
