Was David Corenswet meant to play Superman? James Gunn reveals he seemingly rejected the actor from playing Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Regardless of how fans feel about James Gunn helming a Superman reboot, everyone seems happy David Corenswet gets a crack at playing the Man of Steel. However, that wasn’t the only superhero he almost played. According to Gunn, Corenswet auditioned to play Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, though he personally doesn’t recall.
“I asked him about [his audition] and he said he did so I believe him, but I don’t remember it,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “And no what we’re doing now for flying is much more complex than what was done for [Adam Warlock]”
It certainly would have been interesting to see David Corenswet play Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 instead of Will Poulter. However, given how fantastic Poulter was in the role, James Gunn may have made the right move when it comes to casting. This also means fans should be excited for when they finally get to see Corenswet’s take on Superman in action!
The Many Potential Superman Actors
Just like how James Gunn didn’t just look at Will Poulter to play Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he didn’t just look at David Corenswet to play Superman in his new DCU. Dozens, if not hundreds, of actors tried out for a part in his reboot. One particularly interesting one is Nicholas Hoult, who ended up playing Lex Luthor in the final product.
Pierson Fodé was also said to be a Superman frontrunner prior to David Corenswet’s casting, with James Gunn allegedly taking a liking to childhood footage of an actor on a farm. Other notable names include Andrew Richardson and Tom Brittney. While all of those actors could have been interesting, Gunn likely made the best choice possible for his reboot, which is certainly an exciting prospect.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
