Despite being received overwhelmingly positively by audiences, Shazam! Fury of the Gods continues to struggle critically and at the box office. In a recent Twitter thread defending the film’s quality, Shazam! director David F. Sandberg reveals he’ll be stepping away from the superhero genre.

Even though they haven’t been the biggest earner for DC through the years, David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! films have mostly been a hit with fans due to the distinct feel they have compared to other entries in the superhero genre. Much of that comes from Sandberg, who served as the director for Shazam! and its sequel, but initially cut his teeth in the industry with low-budget horror flicks. According to a recent post on Twitter, its exactly that type of movie he’s eager to get back to after half a decade working on Shazam!:

“As I’ve been saying for a while now I’m very eager to go back to horror (as well as trying some new things). After six years of Shazam I’m definitely done with superheroes for now.”

Sandberg would go on to clarify that his eagerness to move on to darker pastures doesn’t mean he regretted any of his time that he spent on the Shazam! movies. He ensures fans that the experience is something he’ll forever be grateful for:

“Just to be clear, I don’t regret even for a second making the Shazam movies,” He continued “I’ve learned so much and gotten to work with some truly amazing people. Will forever be grateful that I got to direct two of these! They’ve been very challenging but valuable experiences.”

It’s unclear what the future holds for both David F. Sandberg and the Shazam! franchise. Sandberg is currently attached to a number of diffrent projects, including a film called The Culling for Lionsgate as well as a feature adaptation of The Unsound for Netflix. Shazam! Fury of the Gods sets up a future for the titular character, though changes in leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery and the departure of Sandberg as director make it unclear if this vision will ever come true.
