Batman Begins writer David Goyer recently commented on a longtime Ra’s al Ghul fan theory.
Christopher Nolan presented a grounded Gotham City that started with Batman Begins. However, Ra’s al Ghul is well-known for his ties to the supernatural Lazarus Pit, which grants him immortality. Batman Begins changed up Ra’s al Ghul’s method of immortality by having him use decoys. Ra’s Al Ghul would eventually become immortal in a way with Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises.
Liam Neeson also reprised his role as Ra’s al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises as a vision, but many fans have theorized that he survived because of the moment where Ra’s al Ghul closed his eyes before his death in Batman Begins. During a [email protected] panel with Backstory, David Goyer debunked the theory by saying the following:
“I think you’re reading far too into it. Certainly there was never any discussion that Chris or I had about that. But if you think about it, it was a fairly realistic approach. I think if you introduce something like the Lazarus Pit into that (I’m not saying you couldn’t tell a cool story with the Lazarus Pit; I think you could), I just don’t think that the Lazarus Pit would’ve gelled with that approach.”

Here is the synopsis for Batman Begins:
As a young boy, Bruce Wayne watched in horror as his millionaire parents were slain in front of him–a trauma that leads him to become obsessed with revenge. But the opportunity to avenge his parents’ deaths is cruelly taken away from him by fate. Fleeing to the East, where he seeks counsel with the dangerous but honorable ninja cult leader known as Ra’s Al-Ghul, Bruce returns to his now decaying Gotham City, which is overrun by organized crime and other dangerous individuals manipulating the system. Meanwhile, Bruce is slowly being swindled out of Wayne Industries, the company he inherited. The discovery of a cave under his mansion, along with a prototype armored suit, leads him to assume a new persona, one which will strike fear into the hearts of men who do wrong; he becomes Batman!!!
Directed by Christopher Nolan who co-wrote the script with David Goyer, Batman Begins stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson, Rutger Hauer, Ken Watanabe, and Morgan Freeman.
