David Harbour explains why he blames the failure of 2019’s Hellboy on fans of Guillermo Del Toro’s original two films.

When David Harbour’s Hellboy arrived in 2019, the majority of fans and critics alike weren’t impressed with the new take on the Mike Mignola comics, especially after the incredible work that Guillermo Del Toro did in 2004 and 2008. Bn a recent live stream on his Instagram, David Harbour explained that he thinks fans of Guillermo Del Toro’s take on the character caused the reboot to fail.

The star mentioned that because Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy was so iconic, it was obvious from the online outcry that a large portion of fans didn’t want the new film to even make it to theaters. Harbour also defended the work he put in on the reinvention, calling it “a fun movie”. The star finalized his comments about the film explaining that he learnt his lesson – implying he wouldn’t be jumping on to reinvent other classic characters any time soon.

“I think it failed before we began shooting because I think that people didn’t want us to make the movie and for some reason there was like a big… Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman created this iconic thing that we thought could be reinvented and then they certainly – the loudness of the internet was like, ‘We do not want you to touch this.’ And then we made a movie that I think is fun and I think had its problems but was a fun movie and then people were just very very against it and that’s people’s right but I learned my lesson in a lot of different ways”

Why do you think Hellboy flopped? Did you enjoy David Harbour’s version of the demonic hero?
