Well, who could’ve seen that coming? After China allowed a more family-friendly version of the film to play in theaters, 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool 2 has risen above the pack to become the highest grossing X-Men film to date.
As is right now, based on a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the box office gross for Deadpool 2 currently sits at a grand total of $784 million at the worldwide box office. For comparison’s sake, the original Deadpool film collected $783 million, not adjusted for inflation. Since the release of the PG-13 take on the Merc with the Mouth, the X-Men film has brought in $45 million, with much of that box office gross coming from China. Incidentally, it wasn’t until some time last year, more than two years after its release, that the first film was allowed to play in China.
Between this and Once Upon a Deadpool, it’s clear that while a family-friendly take on Deadpool can still make money, the R-rated stuff is still what many people come out to see. With the numbers for Deadpool 2 looking as stellar as they do right now, that’s good news not just for the Merc with the Mouth, but Fox’s X-Men franchise as well.
Still, though, like most of Fox’s X-Men projects, things appear to be in flux when you factor in the Disney acquisition. But Ryan Reynolds did state that a third Deadpool film is in development, so hopefully we get to see that come to pass. What do you think of how the second Deadpool film has done at the box office? How do you feel about it being the highest grossing X-Men film so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Deadpool 2 is available now on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
