Why didn’t Hugh Jackman wear his cowl more? The director of Deadpool and Wolverine Shawn Levy reveals his restraint in bringing the iconic costume to life.
The internet lost its collective mind when it was leaked that Hugh Jackman would finally be donning the iconic suit and cowl in Deadpool and Wolverine. However, a tinge of disappointment set over fans when they realized he only wore it for a few minutes at the end of the film. According to the project’s director Shawn Levy, this was done on purpose.
“So did we when we filmed it, by the way. So did we,” Levy reflected on Deadpool and Wolverine when asked about the exciting moment by Collider. “I just remember very early on when I was storyboarding, it became clear, ‘Okay, he’s got to wear the mask but don’t give it up too early. Make them wait for it. Make it later and make it count.'”
Given fans have been waiting over twenty years for Hugh Jackman to finally wear his cowl, it makes sense that the director would want to hold back the moment for something special. With how chock- full Deadpool and Wolverine was when it came to people-pleasing moments, Shawn Levy had to space them out so as to not give audiences a heart attack!
Shawn Levy Teases His Marvel Future
While Shawn Levy fulfilled the dreams of the past with Hugh Jackman’s cowl in Deadpool and Wolverine, it seems his future is brighter than ever in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When speaking about the project, the director admitted he never set out to do anything more than make the movie of a lifetime, but there are certainly good things to come regarding his time in the MCU.
“Nothing in an official way,” Levy admitted to Entertainment Weekly when asked about a potential future collaboration with Marvel Studios. “Just so much shared respect and affection between really all of us. Ryan and I as co-writers, as producers, and as star and director, we had the time of our life making this thing.”
“It was certainly before the outcome was mind-blowingly great. So Kevin and Lou [D’Esposito] and I, all of us have talked about what might come next. I am now even more confident than I was on that red carpet that Marvel and I are not done with each other.”
It’ll be interesting to see where Shawn Levy goes after Deadpool and Wolverine. It’s not as though the scope of the Marvel universe gets much grander than the return of Hugh Jackman as the iconic Weapon X! Though given how much the director hit this project out of the park, it’s likely he’ll replicate the success next time around.
