Could Charles Xavier have made his return in Deadpool and Wolverine? James McAvoy speaks on if he was asked to make a cameo as Professor X.
Deadpool and Wolverine was a lot of things, but it also served as a true celebration of the Fox era of X-Men films. This was completed with a beautiful montage of BTS footage from prior movies, which included a clip of James McAvoy as Professor X. When asked if he was ever meant to cameo in the film, McAvoy admitted that the small clip was the extent of his return to the role.
“I knew I was going to be in the credits. I demanded. [Laughs] No,” McAvoy explained in a recent chat with Variety. “No, no, no, no. Not this one. I don’t think so. If there was a world, they clearly threw that idea out the window before calling me, so no.”
It was a shock that Deadpool and Wolverine didn’t include the return of more X-Men in the main runtime, especially given the backstory of the film’s leads. However, at the very least James McAvoy is in good spirits about his very minor cameo as Professor X. But despite not having a large role in this film, his time as Charles Xavier may be far from over.
James McAvoy Speaks On Professor X Return
It’s not as though Deadpool and Wolverine has been the only Marvel project to feature the return of iconic heroes. Especially with Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, it may only be a matter of time until James McAvoy has the chance to play Charles Xavier again. When asked about the possibility, McAvoy admitted that the door is always open for him to make a cameo.
“I’ve always said, if there’s a good role, if there’s a good opportunity to tell a good story, I’m always going to be interested in it, no matter whether it’s something I’ve done before or something completely brand new,” McAvoy continued. “If there’s good material, I’m always ready to respond. I’m always ready. Ever ready! Actor ready! It’s got to be good, and they’ve got to want to do that, so it’s all hypotheticals.”
Given the distinct lack of X-Men in Deadpool and Wolverine, it’s possible that Marvel is saving their return for a future project. This certainly bumps up the prospects of James McAvoy making a cameo as Charles Xavier in the MCU. Though given what happened to Professor X the last time he showed his face, it may be best for him to keep his head on a swivel!
