It seems Deadpool and Wolverine never planned to take the MCU seriously! One of the film’s producers revealed their early concepts that poked fun at Marvel.
As much as Deadpool and Wolverine served as a loveletter to the Marvel universe outside of the MCU, it also poked a lot of fun at the franchise. The entire plot of the film revolved around everything not created by Disney being left in a garbage dump. However, it seems that wasn’t always the plan, and might’ve actually been the nicest path the team could’ve taken!
Wendy Jacobson, who served as executive producer for Deadpool and Wolverine, revealed that the film went through a lot of concepts before landing on the current incarnation. Many of them poked fun at Marvel Studios, with one of the most surprising being an almost shot-for-shot remake of one of the MCU’s most hated films.
“So many different ideas, they really ran the gamut,” Jacobson explained in a recent interview with CBR. “I think at one point, we had a very modestly budgeted indie road trip movie with him and Dopinder. We had a frame for frame remake of Thor 2 with Deadpool in it until the first act break. We had all kinds of things.”
Deadpool’s Scrapped Connection To The MCU
All of those ideas would have certainly been a blast, even if not as fun as what they ultimately went with for Deadpool and Wolverine. However, it seems recreating Thor wasn’t even the closest the film got to Marvel’s canon. Continuing on, Wendy Jacobson revealed that a clipshow was planned to reveal that Deadpool had been in the MCU the entire time!
“We had Deadpool’s deleted scenes extravaganza where we were going to show that Deadpool was in the MCU all along – his scenes were just on the cutting room floor,” Jacobson explained. “So, those were just a few of the crazy ideas…I will do anything Ryan [Reynolds] wants to do, let’s be clear, because I know it’s going to be great.”
It would’ve been truly insane for it to be revealed that Deadpool was canon to the MCU the entire time. However, given the appearance of a number of key X-Men in his films, it likely would’ve made hardcore Marvel canon-heads blow their tops. While all would’ve been fun to see, it’s clear that Deadpool and Wolverine won out as the perfect choice for the sequel.
