Deadpool 2 director David Leitch suggested a third film could have a lower age rating now that Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox.
After Disney gained the film rights to Deadpool and other Marvel characters as part of its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, fans began to speculate on how Marvel Studios might incorporate the Merc with a Mouth considering his crude sense of humor doesn’t seem like a natural fit with the House of Mouse’s family-friendly brand. In fact, some suspect that a third Deadpool film would have to forgo an R-Rating in order to be released under the Disney umbrella.
In an interview with Yahoo Movies UK, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch said that while he believes a third film may have to have a lower age rating, it’s possible Disney and the filmmakers behind the Merc with Mouth’s film series could find a “happy ground”:
“It’s rated R so that’s not necessarily the [MCU] brand but he doesn’t necessarily need to be R and [Disney] don’t necessarily need to only make PG-13 movies. I think we’ll find a happy ground.”
David Leitch added that while there’s still some “mystery” surrounding Disney and Marvel’s plans for Deadpool, everything sounds positive from what he’s heard:
“There’s a lot of mystery still surrounding what they want to do with Deadpool in [Disney’s] Marvel world but I think, from discussions that I’ve heard, it’s all positive. I think that they’re just trying to figure a way in as Deadpool’s hard.”
