Marcel the Shell with Shoes On director Dean Fleischer Camp has been hired by Disney to direct its upcoming live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch.
Since the release of Tim Burton’s live-action remake of Alice in Wonderland, Disney has been setting out and remaking and/or reimagining its various classic films. Many of these films have earned over $1B worldwide including the remakes of the aforementioned Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin. Now the studio is moving into the 21st century with its remakes.
Lilo & Stitch Finds Its Leaders
Disney has been developing a live-action version of Lilo & Stitch since 2018 although not much is known of it. Originally screenwriter Mike Van Waes was set to pen the script but little seems to have come of that version. Chris Kekaniokalani Bright is in final negotiations to pen a new script, but now, thanks to The Hollywood Reporter we now know who will direct the film. According to the report Dean Fleischer Camp is set to help the upcoming film. The director’s resume mostly amounts to work on television shorts but recently extended to feature film with Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
The original film focused on a pair of sisters who were trying to survive following the death of their parents. In order to help the younger sister, Lilo, cope, the older sister, Nani, takes Lilo to a dog shelter to adopt a dog. The animal they end up choosing is Stitch who just so happens to be an alien on the run. The rest of the film focuses on other aliens attempting to hunt Stitch down as the sisters try and go about their daily life while a social worker tries to assess if Nani is an appropriate guardian for Lilo.
