Detective Pikachu director Rob Letterman expressed his honest thoughts about the controversial Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
Detective Pikachu hits theaters in less than a week, with Ryan Reynolds lending his voice to the live-action adaptation of the hit video game. Last week, another trailer promoting a live-action adaptation of a beloved video game character hit the web, which was, of course, Sonic the Hedgehog.
The Sonic the Hedgehog trailer was controversial amongst the fanbase due to its character design of the titular hero. Sonic the Hedgehog‘s director has since promised the character will be redesigned before the movie hits theaters.
Detective Pikachu has earned a lot of praise from fans due to the character design and, while speaking to The Verge, director Rob Letterman offered his thoughts on the Sonic the Hedgehog controversy. The Detective Pikachu director first began with a very wise way of looking at filmmaking:
“There’s no right or wrong to how you make one of these movies.”
The Detective Pikachu director then gave a more detailed response in regards to the Sonic the Hedgehog controversy. To give fans a hint at how daunting of a task redesigning a CG character is, Letterman described the pre-production process on Detective Pikachu:
“It would be very difficult for us to redesign anything. We spent a year designing all the characters ahead of shooting so that we could get it all right. If we were off by an inch on Pikachu, [actor] Justice Smith’s performance would go right out the window. For us, it would have been impossible — but that doesn’t mean they can’t do it. I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes — they’re in a difficult spot.”
