Emilia Harcourt, a character portrayed by James Gunn’s wife Jennifer Holland in Peacemaker, is set to be revived in DC Comics. However, according to the DC Studios co-chair, he had nothing to do with it.
After six years, Emilia Harcourt is being revived in the pages of Batman: The Brave and The Bold. This has led a certain subsection of fans to believe DC Studios co-chair James Gunn is behind the character’s revival, citing his seeming favoritism of his wife due to her leading role in Peacemaker and her cameos in both Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. However, according to the comics’ writer Rob Williams, Gunn had nothing to do with the decision:
While James Gunn may not have directly caused Emilia Harcourt’s resurrection, he certainly had a hand in it. Despite the ire from some fans, Jennifer Holland has become a staple of DC Studios productions and in some respects a fan-favorite following her role in Peacemaker. Her popularity certainly perked the interest of the character’s creator Rob Williams, which is likely the reason behind her resurrection.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
