John Wick Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski has stated that the goal of the film is to make Keanu Reeves’ character suffer.

Throughout the John Wick series, Keanu Reeves’ titular character suffers through a lot. The first film literally opens with the death of his wife and a thug killing his new puppy. Throughout the films, he is shot, stabbed, thrown off of buildings, and takes an ungodly amount of punishment. All the while, he slaughters everyone in his path in a way that would make any 90s action hero flinch.

The latest installment of the franchise, John Wick Chapter 4 was delayed numerous times which was due, in part, to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the release of the third Keanu Reeves film, a spinoff has been put into development as has prequel miniseries. A fifth film is set to be released after the fourth.

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, franchise director Chad Stahelski opened up about the creative process for the series. He noted that the way they approach everything is to figure out a way to make John Wick suffer as much as possible and work backward from their:

“We keep finding new and interesting ways to have John Wick suffer. That’s where the action comes from. Figure out how to make him suffer, and then design backward.”

Here is the official synopsis for the latest film in the franchise:

John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “Excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.

Directed by Chad Stahelski from a script written by Derek Kolstad, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum stars Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Ian McShane, Ruby Rose, Common, Lance Reddick, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jason Mantzoukas, Anjelica Huston, and Boban Marjanovic.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently set to be released on March 24, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
