In a not-so-suprising move given the ongoing WGA strike, Disney made a slew of announcements on Tuesday regarding its upcoming film releases. Among the changes are the next Avatar and Star Wars movies, as well as updates to the Marvel Cinematic Universe lineup.

This morning, Disney revealed that James Cameron’s Avatar 3 is now slated to hit theaters in December 2025. The fourth and fifth installments have been rescheduled for December 2029 and December 2031 respectively, maintaining the franchise’s tradition of holiday season releases.

Furthermore, Disney announced two new Star Wars films set for 2026, with one moved from its original December 2025 date to May 22, 2026. The second feature is penciled in for December 18, 2026. Details about the two projects are being kept under wraps.

Deadpool 3 moves up as multiple Marvel projects suffer delays

Featuring Marvel veterans Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool 3 will now grace the screens on May 3, 2024. This reflects a shift from its initially planned November 8, 2024 debut, allowing for a more summer-focused release.

Changes are also afoot for the Avengers series, with Avengers: Kang Dynasty now slated for May 1, 2026, a full year later than initially planned. Its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, has been similarly postponed, now aiming for a May 7, 2027 release. Jonathan Majors, the 33-year-old actor who plays the villain of the two films, is currently involved in a legal case in New York, facing assault allegations.

Further reshuffling in the Marvel lineup was announced as well. Captain America: Brave New World now finds itself moved back around three months to July 26, 2024. Similarly, Thunderbolts has been delayed five months to December 20, 2024. Blade now takes a Valentine’s Day slot on February 14, 2025, with Fantastic Four arriving almost three months later on May 2, 2025.
