A new Pirates of the Caribbean film is in production at Disney. When asked about if Johnny Depp would return, Disney Studios Motion Picture Production president Sean Bailey seemingly didn’t commit either way.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has always been closely tied to Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow, perhaps becoming more famous than the movies themselves. However, following Depp’s recent controversies with his ex-wife Amber Heard, his fate in the franchise has been left up in the air. When asked about Depp’s future with the franchise, executive Sean Bailey said that Disney is “noncommittal at this point,” one way or another.
This comment seems to leave the door open for Johnny Depp to return in a future Pirates of the Caribbean installment. Most likely Disney will wait to see how the sixth installment fares without Depp’s Jack Sparrow, likely only bringing him back if the franchise fails without him. Despite this, Sean Bailey assures that the sixth film will feature a “good, exciting story” that “honors the films that come before.”
Disney has seemingly already tried to distance the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise from Johnny Depp. A few years back, it was announced that Margot Robbie would star in a spin-off film for the franchise, though that project ultimately failed to get off the ground. Only time will tell if the sixth film will meet the same fate, or if the legend of Jack Sparrow will be left in Davy Jones’ locker.
