Disney’s new streaming service, Disney Plus has passed over 50M paid subscribers worldwide.
With the coronavirus pandemic still very active across the world, streaming services are now becoming more important than ever. For a while, Netflix was the undisputed king of streaming services but got its first real taste of competition last year. In late 2019, Disney finally launched its own streaming service, which the company called Disney Plus. While Disney Plus had a few startup issues, it was none the less a massive success thanks to launching titles like the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian.
Since Disney Plus launched, its audience has only been growing. More then 10M people subscribed to the streaming service at launch and, as of February of this year, that number had jumped to 28M subscribers. Now thanks to launches in U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and India, that number has almost doubled.
Disney had reported that the number of paid subscribers to Disney Plus has topped 50M. This probably puts it well ahead of the company’s projections for Disney Plus as it had originally projected to hit 60M-90M by 2024. Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International seemed to be ecstatic about the numbers and said that it bodes well for their plans to expand Disney Plus throughout Europe, Japan, and Latin America:
“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year.Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+.”
