Disney Rumored To Be Debating Future R-Rated ‘Deadpool’ Movies

It seems Disney could be debating internally whether or not the studio can still produce R-rated Deadpool films in sync with the two massively successful previous films at Fox, while also having the character crossover into the family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four were previously at Fox, the Marvel heroes now fall under the direction of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. But according to Variety executive editor Brent Lang, there may be some debate inside Disney and Marvel Studios as to whether or not the Deadpool franchise can still sustain R-rated standalone films while also appearing in PG-13 rated films of the MCU.

Deadpool 2 director David Leitch recently said that while he believes the third Deadpool film may need to appeal to a wider, and younger audience, he has faith that the studio will be able to find a happy ground with the filmmakers behind the next film.

20th Century Fox Film vice chairman Emma Watts was originally assumed to be moving over to Disney, with control of Deadpool as part of a package deal, but instead, the executive is remaining at Fox and had to turn over control of Deadpool and other Marvel characters to Feige.

As for the studio itself, Disney CEO Bob Iger previously said Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool would be the only Fox-X-Men franchise that would survive the merger and remain R-rated. Previous comments from Feige himself also suggested that the studio would not be changing anything about Ryan Reynolds’ take on the character even with Disney acquiring 21st Century Fox’s assets.

But what do you think? Can Deadpool still manage to be R-rated inside his own standalone movies and simultaneously fit with the brand for his appearances in the MCU?

Here is the official synopsis for Deadpool 2:

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

Directed by David Leitch from a script written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy.

Deadpool 2 is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD.
