How Disney Discovered Victoria Alonso’s Marvel Studios Contract Breach

New details emerge about the breach!

Previous reports have stated that Victoria Alonso had been fired from Marvel Studios due to a breach of contract regarding the film Argentina, 1985. While the nature of the industry has kept the details of the breach from being revealed, a new report reveals that Marvel seemed to give her leeway with her contract that she continued to ignore.

Victoria Alonso’s Marvel Studios firing took many people off guard. Having been a 17-year veteran of Marvel, Hollywood insiders didn’t expect her departure to be as abrupt or as full of drama as it turned out to be. While Disney claims that the firing happened due to a breach of contract, Alonso’s representatives insist that she left due to the studio asking her to do something “reprehensible”. For a while it seemed as though this situation would be entirely decided by whose word someone trusted more. However a new report by Puck seems to support Disney’s side of the story.

The report points out that Disney could have simply paid her out for any number of reasons, according to the recent backlash against Marvel VFX in the public eye. According to Puck’s Matthew Belloni, the dispute first came up in mid-2021 while renegotiating Alonso’s contract, with Disney discovering she had been producing Argentina, 1985 for Amazon Studios, a direct competitor.

“Disney’s Alan Bergman and Marvel’s Kevin Feige were super annoyed at yet another example of Alonso prioritizing her personal endeavors over the company, and the bad precedent it would set for other Disney executives”

Despite this breach, Disney granted leeway to Alonso due to her tenure at Marvel Studios and allowed her to keep her name on the project as long as she didn’t promote it. In the following months, Alonso would give an interview to Indiewire about the project, as well as attend the BAFTAs in London. These incidents are what ultimately led Disney to let Alonso go.

Victoria Alonso’s Marvel Studios history

Prior to her exit, Victoria Alonso had been a member of the Marvel Studios family since 2006. She started as the chief of visual effects and post-production, where she played a crucial role in launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe by co-producing Iron Man, the superhero movie that featured the debut of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark.

Following the release of Iron Man, Victoria Alonso continued her successful run as a co-producer on Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Alonso was promoted to the position of executive producer for The Avengers, which earned more than $1.5 billion and cemented Marvel as the king of the superhero genre.

In 2021, Victoria Alonso was promoted to president of physical and postproduction, visual effects, and animation production, a position that gave her even greater influence over the creative process of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her exit from the company raises many questions about the future direction of Marvel Studios.

Victoria Alonso has been a pioneer not only in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but in the film industry as a whole, as one of the few Latina women to hold a significant position of power in Hollywood. She has spoken publicly about the importance of diversity and inclusion in filmmaking and has used her position to advocate for more representation both on and off-screen.
