Michale Waldron, writer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has revealed the film almost finished with a post-credits scene teasing the Fantastic Four of the MCU’s 616 universe.
Ultimately Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still featured the MCU’s first Fantastic Four tease, when the Mr. Fantastic of Earth-838, played by John Krasinski, appeared as a member of the Illuminati. Originally, however, Reed Richards was going to feature in a more subtle way.
While the scene never made it off the page, Waldron revealed the Doctor Strange sequel originally included the MCU’s first look at the Baxter Building and a glimpse of Earth-616’s Mr. Fantastic.
Mr. Fantastic In The Multiverse Of Madness
Before the Illuminati were set to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Michael Waldron reveals he still wanted Mr. Fantastic to feature and so included him in a post-credits scene.
In an interview with Empire, Waldron said Mr. Fantastic was “the big one,” revealing “I always wanted Reed Richards in this thing.” The writer went on to reveal that, before the Illuminati were an option, he got a brief glimpse Reed into the script in a post-credits moment in the Baxter Building.
Michael Waldron spoke about the scene in his initial draft of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:
“In my very first draft, I wrote a tag just for the hell of it, of the events of the movie being recorded and reviewed by somebody in the Baxter Building, and a stretchy hand coming into frame to run it back. Reed is probably my favorite Marvel comics character, so I was always gunning to get him in here somewhere.”
By the time the film was released, Reed Richards’ role had evolved from a stretchy hand appearing from off-screen into a fully-blown supporting role during a key sequence in the film. While John Krasinski played Earth-838’s Mr. Fantastic, the MCU’s primary version of the character will be unveiled in 2024’s Fantastic Four.
