Will The Matrix franchise finally be good again? Drew Goodard is officially attached to helm the franchise’s next installment.
The Matrix has been a franchise that’s struggled, to say the least. The first film was a smash hit by the Wachowski Sisters, literally revolutionizing action movies as fans know them. However, the sequels failed to recapture the magic of the original, resulting in movies that were only just “fine” compared to their historical predecessor.
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman in a statement. “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
In 2021 Lana Wachowski attempted to recapture the magic with The Matrix Resurrections. The film was certainly better than the prior attempts at a sequel, but still resulted in a relatively mediocre movie compared to the first one, leading many fans to wonder if the franchise will ever reach its peak once more.
Drew Goddard Takes The Red Pill
However, it’s possible that The Matrix will finally get a proper resurrection. It’s been confirmed that Drew Goddard is attached to a new installment in the franchise, being set to write, produce, and direct the upcoming film in collaboration with Warner Bros. Picture Group.
It’s currently unclear if the project will be a direct sequel or a spin-off akin to the beloved anime The Animatrix. However, given Drew Goddard’s history of mind-bending and boundary-pushing projects like The Cabin in The Woods and Cloverfield, he may be the only director capable of bringing The Matrix back to its former glory.
