Dune director Denis Villeneuve has opened up about how they brought Arrakis to life in a new featurette.

Last year Denis Villeneuve’s Dune became one of Warner Bros’ big success stories. The film ultimitly went on to earn over $390M at the worldwide box office making it the studio’s second highest-grossing film of the year, behind only Godzilla vs Kong. The movie was also a big hit on HBO Max, topping even Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Soon after the film opened, Warner Bros confirmed that the second film was in development with an October 2023 release date. Since then, Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that book antagonist Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen would be in the sequel but little has been revealed outside of this. This, however, has not stopped the people behind the film from talking about the first film.

In a recent featurette, Dune director Denis Villeneuve talked about bringing the world of Arrakis to life. In the movie, simply surviving the world of Arrakis took up a lot of the film’s runtime with the characters explaining how to survive the planet’s harsh environments. In the featurette, the director explains how they brought the world itself to life in a convincing way and where it was they shot it to enhance this effect:

Here is the synopsis for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune:

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

Denis Villeneuve directed Dune from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem and David Dastmalchian.
