Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne has admitted he didn’t recognize his former roommate, Robert Pattinson, when he saw him training for The Batman.
Robert Pattinson plays the title role in The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, which follows the DC superhero through his early days of crime-fighting. To many fans, Pattinson, who is best known for his leading role in the Twilight movies, was a surprising choice for the role of the Dark Knight. Even with his move into more mature films like The Lighthouse and Good Time, Pattinson’s youthful looks and lean frame made him an unexpected choice for the intimidating figure of Batman. However, the actor clearly committed to getting into superhero shape for the movie, as his own former roommate, fellow actor Eddie Redmayne, didn’t recognize him when he saw Pattinson at the gym.
Talking about the encounter in an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Eddie Redmayne admitted he had not realized he was sharing the gym with Robert Pattinson until the end of his workout, when Pattinson said goodbye to him. As well as Pattinson’s new superhero physique, Redmayne talked about seeing his old roommate “doing the most extraordianry stunts I’ve ever seen.” He also referenced Pattinson’s man-bun, so maybe the actor’s unusual hairstyle threw Redmayne off as well. Check out the full quote below:
“One day, I went to the gym and I walked in and there was this guy with, like, a high ponytail. Massive, doing the most extraordinary stunts I’ve ever seen with his stunt director and… and it was that slightly embarrassing thing when you’re a skinny runt, and you go into a gym, and there’s someone… and this is the same gym that, like, Jason Momoa goes to. You’re quite used to big guys. And I walk in and there’s this guy, and this guy goes, ‘Hi,’ and I go, ‘Hi,’ and then I just sort of sit there, watching him do these incredible things while I, sort of, you know, weakly do a sit-up in the corner…”
“Anyway, after, like, forty minutes of doing this, I sort of go – not forty minutes, ten minutes – I go to sort of scuttle off and as I’m going this guy goes, ‘Bye Eddie!’ And I look back and it was Rob! And he was so physically changed and he had a man-bun.”
The result of Robert Pattinson’s heavy workout regime can be seen in The Batman. Here is the official synopsis:
Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero and Bruce Wayne, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Barry Keoghan as The Joker.
