Eizza Gonzalez recently broke her silence on losing out the role of Catwoman in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman.
Warner Bros. and DC’s The Batman will feature several characters from the pages of DC Comics, including the iconic burglar Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman. While Big Little Lies and High Fidelity star Zoe Kravitz was ultimately cast as Catwoman, one of the final contenders for the role was Bloodshot actress Eiza Gonzalez.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Eiza Gonzalez discussed the heartbreak she felt after losing out on the role of Catwoman. Noting that she’s terrible at not getting ahead of herself during the casting process, Eiza Gonzalez explained that she truly imagines herself in the role and the possibilities that may follow, especially when she gets as far as she did while auditioning for Catwoman for The Batman:
“Itโs impossible not to do that, especially when you get so far down the line. Itโs part of why youโre so far down the line, because youโre living and dreaming the character. For my prep for every role, Iโm kind of a weirdo, especially when Iโm already at the camera test stage or really deep into it. I will live and breathe the character; Iโm more traditional in that sense. It is heartbreaking; it is always hard. You have to envision yourself in the role in order to see the role. You canโt have one foot in and one foot out. When I started my career, I was more like that, and I wouldnโt get that far. In a sense, it didnโt hurt as much, but I didnโt give it the best version of what I thought I could do. So now I do, and I just go through the heartbreak afterwards. I always explain it as this relationship that you work on. You fall in love, you go through all the stages โ and it never really solidifies. Itโs this process that never has closure; it just goes away. So it feels like a relationship that didnโt result in anything. Itโs always heartbreaking, but what Iโve learned with time, those relationships that you curate and the people that you meet donโt go away. Iโve been in situations where theyโve seen me for different roles that didnโt work out, but then they come around for something else. The beauty of our industry is itโs never-ending; itโs always evolving and transforming. Iโm just lucky and grateful that Iโve had the chance to meet incredible directors and be part of incredible projects. Growing up in Mexico, I never wouldโve thought Iโd be doing these types of projects. (Laughs)”
