Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Elizabeth Olsen has talked about criticism of Marvel movies and how she feel it is unfair to the talent of the crew involved.
Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brings Elizabeth Olsen back into the MCU as Wanda Maximoff/the Scarlet Witch following her last appearance in WandaVision on Disney Plus. The film sees her reunited with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in a plot that sends them across the multiverse to various alternate realities. The film is a major moment for Phase 4 of the MCU, which looks set to continue diving deep into the multiverse, and sees Sam Raimi return to Marvel movies for the first time since 2007’s Spider-Man 3.
Recent years have seen it become somewhat fashionable for revered directors such as Martin Scoresese and Francis Ford Coppola to pass criticism on Marvel movies and their franchise model. At the very least, such criticisms have succeeded at getting the attention of the press. While discussing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in a recent interview with The Independent, Elizabeth Olsen was asked about the criticisms leveled at Marvel. Olsen revealed that what bothers her most about such criticism is that it appears to dismiss the wealth of incredible talent working on Marvel movies behind the scenes:
“I’m not saying we’re making indie art films, but I just think it takes away from our crew, which bugs me. These are some of the most amazing set designers, costume designers, camera operators – I feel diminishing them with that kind of criticism takes away from all the people who do award-winning films, that also work on these projects.
“From an actor’s point of view, whatever, I get it; I totally understand that there’s a different kind of performance that’s happening. But I do think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away from the hundreds of very talented crew people. That’s where I get a little feisty about that.”
The talent of all those who work hard to bring Marvel movies to life is certainly on full display in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which presented the daunting task of breathing life into alternate versions of characters, sets and scenery from across multiple realities.
Here is the synopsis for the Marvel Studios film:
