Elton John Disappointed With ‘The Lion King’ Remake: “They Messed The Music Up”

The Lion King Elton John

Sir Elton John was disappointed with Jon Favreau’s remake of Disney’s 1994 animated film, The Lion King, citing that his original music was messed with for this new interpretation.

Elton John was promoting his new autobiography, Me in a recent interview with British GQ. 2019 was a particularly massive year for the legendary singer at the movies, having been the basis of the critically-acclaimed biopic Rocketman where Taron Egerton portrayed Elton John as well as his classic songs from The Lion King being reproduced for the new remake.

Unfortunately, Elton John wasn’t a big fan of The Lion King (2019). Despite contributing one new song for the film’s end credits titled “Never Too Late” with lyricist Tim Rice, Elton John laments that he wasn’t invited by Disney and the rest of the creative team to collaborate more in crafting the music for this new incarnation:

“The new version of The Lion King was a huge disappointment to me, because I believe they messed the music up. Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn’t have the same impact. The magic and joy were lost. The soundtrack hasn’t had nearly the same impact in the charts that it had 25 years ago, when it was the best selling album of the year. The new soundtrack fell out of the charts so quickly, despite the massive box-office success. I wish I’d been invited to the party more, but the creative vision for the film and its music was different this time around and I wasn’t really welcomed or treated with the same level of respect. That makes me extremely sad. I’m so happy that the right spirit for the music lives on with the Lion King stage musical.”

Grammy Award winner Pharrell Williams oversaw the production on the new music for The Lion King (2019) in collaboration with the original film’s Oscar-winning composer, Hans Zimmer. He updated some of Tim Rice’s lyrics and Elton John’s music for some of the film’s actors including Donald Glover, Beyonce Knowles-Carter, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen and Chiwetel Ejiofor to sing.

Elton John and Tim Rice won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1995 for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”
