Emma Roberts, whose previous credits include We’re The Millers and American Horror Story, has officially been cast in Sony’s upcoming Marvel movie Madame Web.
Madame Web follows the Marvel character of the same name, a mysterious mentor figure to Spider-Man, who has been depicted as blind and as having myasthenia gravis in the comics. As a result of her condition she is permanently connected to a web-like life-support system. However, she is an incredibly powerful psychic. Little is known about Sony’s upcoming film adaptation of the character, but Emma Roberts will be joining Dakota Johnson, who stars as the titular character.
Emma Roberts Joins Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
As a Spider-Man character, Madame Web falls under Sony’s remit, being covered by Spider-Man’s film rights. She joins the likes of Venom, Morbius and Kraven the Hunter as the latest Spider-Man character to get their own spinoff movie in Sony’s own cinematic universe.
With Dakota Johnson cast as Madame Web, it appears the film’s approach to the character will differ from the version traditionally shown in the comics. Many have speculated that Madame Web will be an origin story, with Dakota Johnson playing a younger version of Cassandra Webb, who eventually becomes the paralysed clairvoyant seen in Marvel’s comic continuity.
It is not yet known who Emma Roberts will be playing in Madame Web. She is the latest actress to join the cast, following announcements that Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced and Tahar Rahim will appear in the movie. Roberts has recently worked as a producer on popular Netflix series First Kill.
