An early easter egg from Eternals subtly plants the seeds for Sprite’s betrayal.

Eternals is the gift that keeps on giving! With Chloe Zhao’s sci-fi epic finally streaming on Disney Plus, Marvel fans have been poring through the film, trying to figure out the film’s many secrets. As expected, they’ve come across something seriously monumental that makes Sprite’s betrayal all the more tragic.

As Eternals raced its way to its third act, Sprite betrays her group and joins Ikaris, who she’s secretly been in love with for thousands of years. She notably stabs Sersi in the back, who happened to be Ikari’s beau for quite a huge chunk of time. Sersi also took the responsibility of being Sprite’s “ward”, which made the betrayal even more tragic.

One eagle-eyed fan has discovered that Sprite’s betrayal is foreshadowed early on in the film. After Sprite unsheathes her sword in London following the Deviant attack, we see that Japanese text is layered onto it:  “セルシ.” What does it mean? See what the Redditor had to say below.

Seeing as Sersi gave her sword to Sprite, it makes the back-stabbing all the more heartbreaking. As the film comes to a close, the “sisters” make amends and Sprite is able to live a life as a human who is able to grow. As for Sersi and the rest of the Eternals? Well, they’ve got to deal with Arishem.

Here is the synopsis for Eternals:

The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.

Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
