The Falcon and The Winter Soldier episode five was tipped to feature a surprising cameo, and it delivered audiences a mysterious new villain.

Major spoilers ahead for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier episode five.

With The Falcon and The Winter Soldier closing in on a big dramatic finale with the Flag Smashers taking their fight directly to Global Repatriation Council in New York, it seems like Sam Wilson is finally ready to suit up as Captain America. But the episode sneakily introduced a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after John Walker’s hearing for brutally murdering one of the revolutionaries on the streets of Riga in episode four. Say hello to Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

In the short scene, Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) approaches John and basically tells him she can help with his current predicament, teasing that she’ll be calling on him very soon. In the comics, Fontaine has had a long history working with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury before taking on an iconic villainous mantle; Madam Hydra. Although she was later revealed as a Russian sleeper agent, which could tease what’s ahead for the character in the MCU.

Since Julia Louis-Dreyfus is expected to appear in Black Widow it seems likely that Marvel is setting the star up for an ongoing role in the MCU because originally The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was meant to arrive after Scarlet Johansson’s solo movie. There’s plenty of theories flying around that Marvel Studios might be introducing an MCU version of the Thunderbolts, and this could be the start of that.  Take a look at Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in the series below.
