Earlier today a series of photos from Todd Philips upcoming Joker film leaked online. Now DC fans are giving their opinions on the new look and the reactions may surprise you.
From the start, the idea of a stand alone Joker film that focused on the character’s past was a dubious one. A big part of what made the character work so well was that his past was rather ambiguous. His claimed origin stories constantly contradicting each other and never remaining definitive for long, suggesting that he himself may not be aware of who he was before becoming the Clown Prince of Crime. Fans, however, seem to be on board with Joaquin Phoenix, even if they aren’t sold of the film itself.
Some, for example, already want him to replace the Jared Leto version of the character:
So hey, @wbpictures? I’m just putting this out here, if you want to replace Jared Leto’s Juggalo Joker w/ Joaquin Phoenix’s for your new DC film universe mission statement, ain’t no one gonna stop you or complain.#JokerMovie https://t.co/2atp02oFy8

Others have been comparing it positively to the looks of Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker and speculating that the look is something of a “before” version:
If I had to guess, Joaquin's Joker wears clown makeup similar to Ledgers to commit crimes, only to have it bleach into his skin permanently when he falls into the chemicals https://t.co/gFKx4g8Tve

Some, however, are not as sold, comparing this look to something they would expect out of one of the Clown Prince of Crime’s henchmen:
Hmm honestly not a fan. Just looked it up. Like I get making him a unique joker. But he feels like one of the joker's henchmen from the games. It changes what we all understand the joker to look like. Visually w all know the joker by his unique appearance.

Some like Joaquin Phoenix’s facial expressions but seem disappointed by the lack of the chemical wash look:
I love phoenix's joker look but honestly I'm disappointed it's a makeup look and they're not going for the chemical wash look

From the look of things, people are rather divided on the new take on the character but seem to agree that Phoenix was a good casting pic for the character. Whether or not the film turns out any good or if their is even a point to it, however, is still up in the air.
What do you all make of this new Joker look? Is the grounded take a welcome change or should the people in charge given the character a more classical look? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
