‘Fantastic Four’ Star Jessica Alba Says Marvel Films Are “Still Quite Caucasian”

The actress isn't mincing words.

Fantastic Four Jessica Alba

Fantastic Four star Jessica Alba says that the Marvel Studios films are far too dominated by white actors.

In the mid-2000s, Jessica Alba portrayed Sue Storm in Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Both films did decently at the box office but neither was very well received by fans or critics. This eventually prompted 20th Century Fox to reboot the franchise in 2015. The film, Fantastic Four, sadly crashed and burned with audiences and critics and was better known for its behind-the-scenes drama than anything else.

Fifteen years have passed since Jessica Alba last appeared in the Fantastic Four franchise. Since then Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and acquired the movie rights to the Fantastic Four franchise with a new film in development under Marvel Studios. While many things have changed in the superhero genre, Alba seems to think that some things have remained the same. Specifically that the movies are still far too dominated by white actors.

In a recent interview with Glamor UK, Jessica Alba recalled her time in the Fantastic Four franchise and how the superhero genre was dominated primarily by white actors. While things have changed they still more of the same in certain regards to Marvel films:

“Even if you look at the Marvel movies – that’s the biggest driver of fantasy and what’s happening right now in entertainment, because it’s sort of the family thing – it’s still quite Caucasian. I would say I was one of the few back in the day… And it was before Marvel was sold to Disney, but it’s still quite more of the same.

I just think more for the younger people who are coming up, who are going to be our future leaders, it’s important for them to see the world on screen, or in stories, in the dreams that we create as entertainers; it reflects the world that they’re in.”

Here is the synopsis for 2015’s Fantastic Four:

A contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Directed by Josh Trank, 2015’s Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Reg E. Cathey, and Tim Blake Nelson.

The film is available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the franchise and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more additional video content.
