Beau DeMayo takes aim at Marvel! The former X-Men ’97 showrunner recently trashed the studio’s animated offerings with What If…? season 3.
If someone weren’t following all Marvel news like a hawk, it’d be understandable if they didn’t realize that What If…? debuted its series finale. Unlike prior outings for the MCU’s landmark animated title, season 3 of the project seemed to come and go without even a hint of fanfare by general audiences.
However, it seems one person has come to make their thoughts loud and clear. Beau DeMayo, who previously served as the showrunner for X-Men ’97 before being let go earlier this year for undisclosed reasons, has taken to social media to give his thoughts on season 3 of the show. Sadly, they aren’t good, with him comparing the dialogue of What If…? to fanfiction and saying he’d rather watch water boil than finish the show.
I’d watch more to give notes on how it could’ve easily been done better but I have some water to watch boil

To has no substance and feels like fanfic. The dialogue is flat and so obvious, and some of the premises are just weird.

Beau DeMayo Fires Back At New X-Men ’97 Showrunner
For those who don’t know, the head writer for What If…? season 3 Matthew Chauncey is set to take over X-Men ’97 in season 3, with Beau DeMayo’s scripts for season 2 being used as a baseline for the upcoming season. This is clearly not something DeMayo is happy about, laying the lack of quality in What If…? at the feet of Chauncey, and accusing him of lying for not knowing about the rights surrounding the X-Men in the MCU.
This is also the season where AC Bradley completely stepped back for Chauncey to take over

They were very well aware that the rights. We had convos. Absolutely bullshit. Again, just liars. They came and asked my #xmen97 team and I what character they could use in #WhatIf Season 3 and we pointed them to What If #12 (1990)
This is like the lying BS with T’Chaka https://t.co/pbfX3kqpYD

This series of posts, along with the underwhelming reception to What If…? season 3, have led many to call for Beau DeMayo to be reinstated as showrunner for X-Men ’97. However, it’s unlikely he’ll be returning to the MCU anytime soon given the studio has still not released any clear statement about why DeMayo was fired, suggesting a seriousness not able to simply by glazed over in a year-long sabbatical.
