Is Crossbones coming back?

Is Frank Grillo finally making his return as Crossbones? The DC Universe’s new face reveals his thoughts on the current state of the MCU.

Frank Grillo is currently doing prime Lebron numbers in the DC Universe. Out of the three projects currently released or releasing, he’s played a leading role in both of the TV shows, and a decently sized supporting role in the film. This is a far cry from his time in the MCU, where he made a single return as Crossbones before going out with a bang.

This has left many to wonder, with Frank Grillo’s increased prominence in the superhero genre, if Marvel is considering bringing him back for one last ride in the MCU. When speaking on the prospect with GQ, he laments that Crossbones never got the love he deserved all those years ago. However, it seems that he doesn’t see room for him to return in lieu of another actor.

“Crossbones never manifested into what it should have. But Crossbones was cool because he wasn’t a superhero, he was just a bad mofo, and he got his licks in. There’s not a day goes by where someone isn’t like, ‘Crossbones!’ And I’m like, Really? That’s so f*cking long ago, and it’s not that much screen time.”

“So it is interesting that it’s becoming a legacy thing. My son loves to see where Flag is going, and he’s always pulling out comics, ‘Dad, they’re bringing Crossbones back, he’s now in Spider-Man,’ and I’m like, ‘It ain’t me, pal- they need a younger Crossbones.'”

Frank Grillo’s Thoughts On The MCU

Frank Grillo has been far from silent about his regrets when it comes to Crossbones. However, it seems that what he sees as a missed opportunity hasn’t spoiled the MCU for him. While the actor does think the franchise has taken some missteps in recent years, he has hope that the franchise can soon return to its former glory.

“[Captain America: The Winter Soldier] is the best Marvel movie. I love them over at Marvel, and it’s so great to see how successful everybody’s become, but I hope that they can get back to the glory of where they were and not just be spectacles that are there to make a lot of money from.”

Given the MCU will be leaning heavily into its mutant saga in the coming years, and Frank Grillo will be occupied with playing Rick Flag Sr. in the DC Universe, it’s not likely that the two parties will reunite for him to return as Crossbones. However, it is at the very least good to see that there isn’t bad blood between the two biggest comic franchises.
