Frank Grillo Teases ‘Superman’ Role And Reveals Why He Prefers DC To Marvel

Does DC do it better?

Frank Grillo has a new home at DC! The former Marvel star reveals why he prefers his role as Rick Flag Sr. as well as hints at his role in Superman.

Fans have been absolutely loving Frank Grillo’s portrayal of Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos. It’s a role he seemed custom built to play. However, it’s far from the only comic book role he’s played in the past. Much like DC Studios co-chair James Gunn, Grillo is actually a refugee from the Marvel universe, having previously portrayed Crossbones in the Captain America franchise.

Frank Grillo has never been quiet with his history in superhero media. Ever since he was cast as Rick Flag Sr., the actor has been vocal that he prefer the world James Gunn has crafted at DC Studios over what he was doing over with Marvel. He expanded on these thoughts in a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, explaining that he loves how contained and personal the DC Universe is compared to the rapidly expanding MCU.

“They’re very different. Marvel’s a different machine, and it’s great in its own right, but the thing I love about James’ and Peter’s DC is that it’s much more contained. It’s so much more personal and I really enjoy it better. I just love being part of something in the embryonic stage and being able to grow with it and watch it and flourish.”

Frank Grillo’s Superman Role Teased

Frank Grillo isn’t slowing down his work in the DC Universe after Creature Commandos. The actor is already set to outpace his Marvel appearances in the next year with his role as Rick Flag Sr. in both Superman and Peacemaker season 2. While the actor held his cards close to his chest as to not spoil James Gunn’s upcoming reboot, he did reveal that his role would be rather small compared to what some fans might expect.

“With Creature Commandos and Peacemaker, Flag is a prominent figure in the stories. With Superman, he kind of just drops in.”

While it’s a shame fans won’t be seeing much of Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. on the silver screen, any role in a Superman film is one to be celebrated. Marvel has been notoriously stingy in allowing their heroes to appear in other solo projects, so the fact that James Gunn is so open to bringing characters from other DC projects into their tentpole film proves Grillo’s point about it being a wholly different machine to the MCU.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
